Michael Marshall is the Interim Director and former Senior Licensing Associate for Innovate UNCG, which serves as the incubator supporting UNCG researchers as they turn ideas into impact.
Dr. Marshall holds a law degree from Wake Forest University and advanced degrees in biology and nanoscience from UNC Greensboro. His PhD work focused on solid-state nanopores and developing technology for biomarker discovery applications capable of single molecule sensitivity. Prior to his PhD studies, Dr. Marshall worked as a Research Scientist in UNCG’s Center for Biotechnology, Genomics and Health Research. Through these research experiences, he has acquired a broad knowledge of technical fields spanning biotechnology, ecology, molecular biology, and biophysics. In addition, Dr. Marshall worked as an attorney in private practice for several years prior to his scientific career, providing legal service and counsel for a wide variety of business matters and transactions.
Dr. Marshall brings both legal and scientific expertise to the team. As the Technology Transfer Officer at UNCG, Dr. Marshall leads the university’s efforts to protect and commercialize faculty driven innovations. He manages the patent prosecution, licensing, and intellectual property strategy for UNCG’s patented knee arthrometer (US Patent No. 12,285,273 B2), originally developed by Drs. Shultz and Schmitz while on faculty.
